AMARC turns twenty-five: 2008 is the Year of Community Radio

The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (known by its French acronym of AMARC) will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2008. AMARC is an international non-governmental organization serving the community radio movement, with almost 3,000 members and associates in 110 countries. Its goal is to support and contribute to the development of community and participatory radio along the principals of solidarity and international cooperation.

It was in August 1983 that a group of community radio fans met spontaneously in Montreal for the first world conference of community radio broadcasters, only to realise at the meeting that there was already an embryonic world movement which brought them together. After nine world conferences, the community radio movement has effectively become a recognized global sector of communication that has a significant social impact in making the world a better place.

WACC has worked with AMARC at national and global levels to further the cause of communication rights and to strengthen the role of community radio in participatory communication development. WACC would like to congratulate AMARC on its achievements to date and wish all its members ‘joyeux anniversaire!’.
