World Forum on Communication Rights

Held on 11th December 2003, the first World Forum on Communication Rights, coordinated by the CRIS Campaign, proved to be one of the most successful Civil Society events during the Summit. The aim of the Forum was to open the debate of the “Information Society” on issues that the Summit has, so far, not come close to discussing:

- Communication, Peace and Conflict;
- Communication and Poverty;
- Communication, copyright, patents and trade;
- Communication and Human Rights.

The Forum, with broad participation from Civil Society groups, was a true alternative to the wash-out that the official process turned out to be.

More information on the World Forum on Communication Rights in French, Spanish and English, including the Forum Statement read by Cees Hamelink is available on www.communicationrights.org

What’s next for CRIS?

The CRIS team and activists will be working on a 12 month project: “The CRIS Global Governance Project”, sponsored by the Ford Foundation, aiming to support the emergence of “communication rights” on a national level, relating to local needs and dynamics influenced by global processes. Advocacy toolkits will be developed to support communication rights activists on the ground in raising awareness and articulating local priorities and activities. This work will be undertaken with partners in Africa, Latin America, South-East Asia and Europe. We are delighted to be working with such a wide array of partners and will keep you informed of the developments.

In 2002, there was CRIS Italy and CRIS Bolivia. In 2003, CRIS Colombia joined the flock. And in early 2004, CRIS USA was born, after effective and lively meetings during the WSIS week in Geneva. CRIS is delighted to see more local networks springing up, as these are key to keeping on-the-ground realities at the forefront of the campaign’s work. We are all very much looking forward to working with CRIS USA and the other CRIS local networks over the coming months. For further information about CRIS USA, please check:
