If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal...
1 Corinthians 13 verse 1
In the Latin American world a new word is becoming popular. It was first used by Eduardo Galeano, the renowned Uruguayan author, when quoting some fishermen he met on a South American coast.
The word brings together the close relationship between what we feel and what we think. It is related to how we should put our feelings, not just our brains in what we do. Feelings are very important and for a long time they were not given enough importance in our western and modern civilisation. It was considered a not too serious feminine trait. Now when our culture is questioning its rational and practical values, we are beginning to give feelings their right place in life, or as we say, 'la vida'.
This could also be the message from the apostle Paul when he says that when it is not love what moves me, the message will not get through. It will be like resounding metal. So everything we do, we have to do with love and we have to love doing it. Love is the force that gives life to everything. So our talking, our communication, our leadership, has to be a labour of love. Or as someone told me, 'If you cannot do what you love, learn to love what you do'. In this loving scenario where we find ourselves and where we have felt embraced by the vegetation and the smiling faces of the people of Fiji; and at a moment of important changes in the world and in our organisation let us not forget that Love is All and that it has to be present in all we do.
This meditation was given by Cándida González-López on behalf of the Caribbean Region of WACC during the Central Committee meeting on Fiji, July 3 2002
