The WACC-Pacific Region Pre-Congress Consultation on Communication: from Confrontation to Reconciliation 14-18 February, 2001, Auckland, New Zealand. Fourteen delegates from seven Pacific island countries attended the consultation.
It was convened to prepare for the WACC World Congress on "Communication: from Confrontation to Reconciliation" in the Netherlands in July 2001. Delegates shared stories of the conflicts in their countries and the progress of the reconciliation process. They raised issues including sustainable development, ethnic differences, violation of human rights and injustice, environment, land rights, governance and militarisation, education, culture and religion.
It was agreed the media, churches and other faith communities, NGOs and governments need to address these issues. The actions need to be both direct and firm. Alternative methods of communication and other non-violent means such as drama and song could be used to raise awareness.
This will help in working toward reconciliation among people in the Region.
The consultation recognised the need to foster:
* Self awareness
* Communication and dialogue
* Commitment to change
* Application of methods to promote peace and justice
* Forgiveness, restitution and reconciliation
* Balancing religious and cultural attitudes
* Promotion of peace and reconciliation through NGOs, Churches, media.
The delegates have committed themselves to carrying into action in their communities the above recommendations.
