WACC signs European Manifesto for Minority Communication Media

Myriam Horngren

The World Association for Christian Communication has endorsed the European Manifesto for Minority Community Media, coordinated by Online/More Colour in the Media. The Manifesto calls for the recognition of the role minority community media play in Europe. It has been drafted by a transnational network of national platforms of minority community media, and approved by national, regional and local groups across Europe. The signatures will be presented during the European elections in 2004 to the President of the European Parliament. To find out more go to:

The CRIS Campaign:

In the last issue of Action, we introduced the “Global Governance Project”, sponsored by the Ford Foundation. Project activities are now under way. The project will focus on four countries: Colombia, Brazil, Kenya, and the Philippines. Additional work will also cover issues related to European legislation and its affects on national communication policies.
Discussions are taking place amongst CRIS members to define activities for CRIS to focus on over the coming year. A clear consensus is emerging:  the essential work undertaken within the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) will carry on during phase II of the Summit. Furthermore, campaign members are overwhelmingly keen to work on the issues of Communication Rights versus Trade as a global theme for action. This shift towards trade isillustrated by the strong reactions and discussions around the UNESCO Declaration on Cultural Diversity which is seen by many as a possible tool to counteract the risk of further commercialization of the creative mind through WTO and GATTS  policies. Communication activists worldwide are paying close attention to diplomatic development around the world.

It seems, however, that progressive communicators are not the only ones with interest in the subject... see this article by Neil Hrab about the International Network on Cultural Policy INCP

The CRIS Charter:
The CRIS Charter is now available, in French, English and Spanish on the CRIS website (www.crisinfo.org). Developed on one hand as a document to define the campaign’s commitment and area of actions, it is also a tool to gather support for the campaign and communication rights as a whole. We invite you to join us and show your support either as an individual or in the name of your organisation.
