WACC supported documentary continues to receive international recognition

“Geha Junction, Tel Aviv, a busy neighbourhood. Here, hundreds of Palestinians live in a derelict underground multi-storey car park, part of an abandoned, unfinished shopping mall. They slip into Israel to find work, to try to bring home a small wage. The documentary “Six Floors from Hell” produced with the financial support of WACC and its German partner, Evangelischer Entwicklungsdienst (EED), has been selected to participate in the London International Film Festival to take place in London, England at the end of March 2009. Last year the documentary was chosen as one of the 12 Israeli films to participate in Doc Aviv, Israel’s most prestigious film festival. The same year it was also one of the films shown at MedFilmFestival in Italy, a yearly event that celebrates intercultural dialogue as well as the social changes taking place on the two shores of the Mediterranean.

The documentary addresses ‘the invisibility’ of Palestinian workers who “illegally” bypass the military checkpoints and separation wall from the Occupied Territories into Israel trying to find work in order to provide for their families. As the LIDF synopsis highlights Jalal, the main character, “ tolerates it because he’s saving for his wedding, and needs money to repair the roof of his new house – and this is his only source of cash. Ghostly voices emerge from the darkness, people joke and laugh, the sounds echoing ominously through this strange underground world. But despite the conditions, they try to stay human – and they try to remember why they’re here.

“Six Floors from Hell” was produced by the group Video 48, the audio-visual wing of Hanitzotz Publishing House, a Jerusalem-based partner of WACC, committed to bridging the gap between Arabs and Jews and to fight for the recognition of Arab-Israeli’s rights.

The documentary film will be premiered in London, England, on March 29 at 18.30 pm at the Roxy Cinema.
