FemLINKPACIFIC: Media Initiatives for Women (FemLINK), Fiji

€ 19,320
Ref. 1370

At a time in the Fiji Islands where the Public Emergency Regulations remain intact, there is a need to demonstrate the role of community media as a viable platform for information and communication. The project will produce content which will demonstrate community media as a valid and valued member of the media in the Pacific region. This is important particularly as mainstream media constrained by government regulations, corporate and profit-oriented interests limits people‟s access to “programme spaces” to communicate, interact and dialogue through creative yet relevant media productions. This project will contribute to improving understanding and practice of peace journalism and 24 communication practices. The project will achieve its objectives through, among other actions, production of community radio programmes, digital stories and podcasts linking to the International Day of Peace, UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and the Global 16 Days Campaign against gender violence. FemLINK is a Fiji-based non profit media agency established in the year 2000 to bridge the information divide between rural and urban women and national and regional policy makers in Fiji and the broader Pacific region.

Largely through community radio, the organisation creates empowering and safe spaces for women to access information, gain confidence and have opportunities to articulate and exchange their viewpoints on peace and human security issues. FemLINK‟s work addresses women‟s underrepresentation in mainstream radio and exclusion from traditional decision making forums.
