La Junta  Directiva de la WACC se reunió el 15 de Noviembre de 2011, para revisar y aprobar dos nuevas declaraciones sobre la misión y la visión de la organización. La Declaración de la Visión de la WACC es ahora “Comunicación para todos/as"

La Declaración de la Misión expresa: “La Organización Mundial para la Comunicación Cristiana (WACC por sus siglas en inglés) es una organización internacional que promueve la comunicación como un derecho humano básico y esencial para la dignidad de las personas y de la comunidad.  Enraizada en la fe cristiana, la WACC trabaja con todas s aquellas personas  a quienes se les niegan el derecho a la comunicación por su status, su identidad o su género. Defiende el pleno acceso a la información y la comunicación y promueve los medios de difusión abiertos y diversos. La WACC refuerza las redes de comunicadores para el avance de la paz, la comprensión y la justicia”.

In a letter addressed to UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon to mark International Day on the Elimination of violence against women and girls, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) points at the extreme levels of violence women journalists face while carrying out their professional duties. The IFJ denounces aggression, threats, political pressure, violence, rape and abuse that women journalists have to face due either to their gender or simply for doing their job. The situation is made much worse by the prevailing culture of impunity which protects and emboldens the perpetrators of these crimes.

Member States approve the reinforcement of UNESCO’s contribution to World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) goals

With only four years left until the 2015 target date for achieving the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) goals, 195 Member States expressed their overall satisfactions with the achievements and progress made by UNESCO and reconfirmed its important role in bridging the digital and knowledge divides. Since the outset of the WSIS process, UNESCO has been committed to implementing the WSIS outcomes.

The Internet Society meeting in Dakar, Senegal, 25 October 2011, has announced that its Board of Trustees addressed human rights issues related to Internet access. The organization has been a long-time advocate of an open, global, and accessible Internet, and views the Internet as an enabler for the realization of a wide range of human rights.

The Internet Society views the Internet as an essential vehicle for promoting freedom of opinion and expression, including "freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers," as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

WACC has long struggled for greater recognition of communication rights. Recently its own Board of Directors affirmed "the centrality of communication – including mass, community and social media – in strengthening human dignity and in promoting democratic values and social justice."

The Internet Society Board noted that in 2011, in what has become known as the "Arab Spring", the Internet gave voice to people's aspirations. "The Internet played a vital role in generating awareness of and support for the efforts of those seeking to bring about change," said Raul Echeberria, Chairman of the Internet Society's Board of Trustees. "The Internet shaped a new generation who are connected to the world and who are global citizens, unconstrained by borders, time, and distance."

The IS Board also noted that the same technology that benefits billions of people throughout the world has also raised some challenges. Among them, it was observed that certain governments control their citizen's access and use of the global network in order to meet economic, security, or political objectives in an evolving policy landscape. For example, DNS blocking and filtering are among the measures used by some to block access to websites. Other measures used include surveillance technology or suspension of Internet access.

The Internet Society Board cautioned against resorting to technological shortcuts to achieve public policy objectives, as such actions can threaten the good functioning of the global Internet as a single, unified, and global communications network.  While the Board recognized that governments have the responsibility to guarantee law and order for their citizens, it held the view that the right to freedom of expression should also be guaranteed.

"The Internet Society has always been focused on Internet freedom, which is the very embodiment of freedom of expression," added Echeberria. "These actions by some governments to limit access to the Internet are sometimes without due regard to the impact on an individual's ability to exercise their fundamental human rights, and include attempts to control social networks. This can be seen as an infringement of the right to peaceful assembly, as guaranteed by Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights."

"Limitations to the exercise of human rights should be the exception and not the rule, a principle which applies both to the online and offline world," stated Internet Society President and CEO Lynn St. Amour. "Any restrictions should respect due process and the provisions outlined in international human rights law, such as necessity and proportionality."

The open, decentralized, and global nature of the Internet provides a foundation for unprecedented growth in freedom of expression and access to information and knowledge. "The increasing pressure to limit access to the Internet has escalated the sense of urgency in addressing this situation,"
added St. Amour. "We will continue our efforts in this important policy area and work to bring attention to the impact of Internet freedom on other aspects of human rights."

Based on its principled vision and substantial technological foundation, the Internet Society works with its members and Chapters around the world to promote the continued evolution and growth of the open Internet through dialogue among companies, governments, and other organizations around the world.

Veintitrés Directores de todas partes del mundo, dos consultores y once empleados han concluido una serie de reuniones, que tuvieron lugar durante una semana. Dichas reuniones finalizaron con nuevas prioridades y direcciones  para la vida y el trabajo futuros de la WACC.

		La Asociación Mundial para la Comunicación Cristiana (WACC por sus siglas en inglés) anunció ayer, 13 de Octubre, que el Dr. Dennis Smith ha sido reelegido como Presidente de la Junta Directiva para los tres próximos años. Simultáneamente, Praxedis Bouwman fue reelecta Vice Presidente y el Rev. David M. Wanless fue electo Tesorero. El nuevo Secretario de la Junta es el Rev. Dr. Samuel Wilson Meshack.

La Junta Directiva de la Asociación Mundial para la Comunicación Cristiana (WACC por sus siglas en inglés) que se reúne en Toronto, está llevando a cabo una capacitación diseñado para aumentar sus conocimientos y habilidades para el gobierno de la Asociación.

Conducido por Joette Thomas, capacitadora  y consultora del Craighead Institute, de Glasgow, Escocia, la formación combina oportunidades para la reflexión, la discusión y el compartir ideas. Entre los temas específicos que se tratan se incluyen responsabilidad, finanzas, estrategia, administración, gobierno, y cómo desarrollar el liderazgo regional.

La opinión general acerca de los beneficios de tal capacitación es muy positiva, como se expresa en las siguientes entrevistas a algunos de los directivos y a la capacitadora.

La visión de la WACC sobre los derechos de comunicación combinados con sus valores cristianos es resaltada en el Informe de las Contrapartes que se dio a conocer ayer.

Las partes interesadas de la WACC – miembros, afiliados, asociaciones regionales, comités ejecutivos, directivos, socios de proyectos, socios financiadores, y el personal – fueron consultados como parte del proceso de planificación estratégica que se duró  un año.  Los resultados se discutieron el 11 de Octubre por la Junta Directiva de la WACC previo a la toma de importantes decisiones sobre el futuro de la WACC.

Toronto, Octubre 9. El trabajo de la Asociación Mundial para la Comunicación Cristiana se está tornando aún más importante en momentos en que la comunicación está cada vez más reducida a la técnica al servicio de intereses y beneficios partidistas, dijo el Presidente de la organización a su Junta Directiva, en el día de la apertura de su reunión del 9 al 14 de octubre en Toronto.

El Consejo de Directivos de la Asociación para la Comunicación Cristiana (WACC por sus siglas en inglés) se reunirá en Toronto, Canadá, del 9 al 14 de Octubre, para discutir el Anteproyecto de Plan Estratégico 2010-2016, después de una serie de consultas regionales y mundiales.

Más de 15 reuniones de consultas han sido celebradas en todo el mundo con los miembros de la Asociación Regional de la WACC, socios de proyectos, Miembros Ejecutivos Regionales, socios fundadores, y demás personal, desde que comenzó el proceso de consultas del plan estratégico en febrero de 2011.

WACC congratulates three women human rights activists and communicators on receiving the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize award. They include Africa’s first female president, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, peace activist Leymah Gbowee, also from Liberia, and democracy activist Tawakkul Karman of Yemen – the first Arab woman to win the prize.

WACC General Secretary, Rev. Karin Achtelstetter, said, “We are excited to learn that the three women who have selflessly struggled to fight for women’s rights and to promote peace have been given this important international sign of recognition.”
