You know what it feels like.

Your group or institution is deeply committed to its mission, yet every day you are conscious of how great is the task and how limited the resources.  How must you change to respond to new challenges?  Must you re-interpret your identity and core values in today's world?  How must your vision evolve to take into consideration new circumstances?  What criteria do you apply to set your strategic priorities?  How do you decide what challenges to accept?  With whom do you build strategic alliances?

These questions – and so many others – lead us to that most intimidating of exercises in the life of our association: strategic planning.

This has been our conversation in WACC in recent months.  Our current program cycle ends in 2011, so the time has come to review thoughtfully what we do and how we do it.

Thank God there are patient, competent experts that can guide us through this process!

Because we are a membership association, the task of imagining WACC's future is entrusted to the membership, both through the direct comments of all members who choose to participate and as represented by Regional Executive Committees and the Board of Directors.

WACC, of course, does not operate in a vacuum.  We work closely with strategic allies, including our funding partners and project holders, throughout the world.  They will also provide valued input as we plan for the future.

WACC is blessed with a highly skilled and committed staff that will participate fully in this process.

As the new Strategic Plan takes shape in the coming months, Karin Achtelstetter, WACC's new General Secretary, will be charged with leading her team in designing the program that embodies WACC's renewed vision.

These are exciting times in the life of WACC.  Join us as we dream dreams and build a common vision for the future!

Dennis A. Smith,
President
