WACC calls for code of ethics for citizen journalism Print E-mail

On World Press Freedom Day 3 May 2012, WACC President Dr Dennis Smith and General Secretary Dr. Rev Karin Achtelstetter invite members and partners to work towards an international code of ethics for citizen journalism. WACC is celebrating the importance of press freedom and remembering journalists whose lives are threatened in the course of their profession. “We urge media practitioners – professional and citizen journalists –collectively to find common ground in efforts to agree on professional standards and codes to guide the practice of journalism. An international code of ethics for citizen journalism would provide a much needed framework for new voices working to transform societies”, they write in an open letter to members and partners. Solidarity and generosity for Radio Shalom Print E-mail

On the small Pacific island of Tahiti, located over 15,000 kilometers from Sierra Leone in West Africa, members of Maohi protestant Church generously responded to a WACC appeal for support for Radio Shalom. They came together to help meet the GlobalGiving Open Challenge launched on April 1, to raise USD 4000 from 50 donors by April 30. Led by Linda Maea Tematua, a member of WACC’s Board of Directors and of the WACC-Pacific Executive Committee, the congregation contributed a total of USD 4000, the highest donation raised throughout the fundraising challenge. HIV/AIDS stigma reduction project by Grassroots Female Communicators Association Print E-mail

A workshop in rural Tanzania provided an opportunity to map a sustainable communication strategy to address HIV and AIDS related stigma at the grassroots level. The workshop was one of several components of an on-going WACC-funded project implemented by Grassroots Female Communicators Association (GRAFCA). The project recognizes the central role community communication can play in creating awareness and understanding of HIV and AIDS in rural areas. Read more...

Communication Rights at the centre of all WACC-Latin America work Print E-mail

The annual meeting of the WACC-Latin America Regional Association (CER), held in La Paz, Bolivia,  March 29-April 1, ended with a call from the Regional  President, José Luis Aguirre, to personal and corporate members in Latin America to support WACC’s GlobalGiving appeal to raise funds for Radio Shalom in Sierra Leone. “This is an opportunity to express solidarity and to support Sierra Leone people’s communication rights to build a more peaceful society”, he said. WACC-Africa leadership training and seminar on Communication for All Print E-mail

The Executive committee of WACC Africa Region (WACC-AR) hosted a leadership training and information sharing consultation in Lome, Togo just before Easter. The theme of the seminar was WACC’s Vision Statement: “Communication for All” and focussed on media communities under threat in several African states. As part of WACC’s ongoing training for leadership, and in preparation for the seminar, Willie Grieve of the Craighead Institute led the Executive Committee members for a day in examing the nature of leadership, how it differs from management and the effectiveness of governance structures.
