WACC photo competition winners announced |

By Teresia Mutuku, Communication Officer and Web Manager, WACC | | Winners of this year’s WACC Photo Competition have been announced. The winning photo was submitted by Chetan Soni, a news Photographer for a National Hindi daily, DainikBhaskar. The photo features a volunteer teaching basic computer skills to tribal poor children in Dhar (mp) India. The theme of this year’s competition was Communication and Poverty. More than 1000 photographs were entered in the competition. The final selection was made by a panel comprised of members of WACC’s Board of Directors and the staff of WACC’s global office.  | | WACC has developed a “Timeline’ listing key milestones which have contributed to its history and growth. The milestones range from events taking place in 1918 to 2010.
In 1968, World Committee for Christian Broadcasting (WCCB) and the Co-ordinating Committee for Christian Broadcasting (CCCB) merge to form the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC). At its first Assembly in Oslo, Norway. 1989 In 1989, WACC organises its first international Congress on the theme “Communication for Community” held in the Philippines. Read more...

WACC President and General Secretary to be awarded Honorary Doctorates |

| | WACC President, Dennis Smith and General Secretary, Randy Naylor, will receive honorary doctorates this summer, August 6, from the Academy of Indian Theology and Church Administration which is affiliated with Gurukul Lutheran Theological College & Research Institute (formerly known as St Paul’s Theological College) based in Chennai.
The college Syndicate met on April 12th and agreed to award them the degree of Doctor of Divinity. WACC Asia Chairperson, Sam Meshack, is the Principal of Gurukul college and a member of the Syndicate.

 | | Winnipeg — About 80 high profile religious leaders from around the world will gather in Winnipeg from June 21- June 23 to listen and report to one another – but most importantly collaborate on sending a unified message to government leaders of the G8/G20 nations. The message will press governments to remain true to the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ratified by the 192 member states of the U.N. ten years ago. The goals aim to halve global poverty by 2015. The G8 nations – including Canada – pledged assistance in achieving the goals, but are well behind in meeting the promised deadline. Full statement...

| | The ‘Facilitator’s Guide for Training on HIV and AIDS Stigma and Discrimination Reduction’ is a practical resource for participatory learning on understanding, recognizing and combating stigma.
The Guide lays out a systematic strategy for workshop discussions on issues such as moral judgments, stigmatizing religious practices and coping with stigma. Of special interest are the novel illustrations on forms of stigma and discrimination adapted to an African social reality. Read more... |

| | Two years after Bangladesh adopts a new Community Radio Policy, the community media landscape is changing. After radio broadcasters from Asia and the Pacific gathered in Bangalore, India, to participate in the 2nd conference of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) Asia-Pacific chapter, one of the region’s most important breakthroughs for community broadcasting in South Asia took place in Bangladesh.  | | Following last years success stories of Asia Communication Sunday, the Executive Committee of WACC - Asia has proposed to observe June 20, 2010 as the Asia Communication Sunday of 2010 on the theme: “Communicating hope amidst diversity: the challenges of multi-faith Asia”, calling for “Communicating Hope”.
"Communication is God’s gift to humanity, which will make us to be truly human, reflecting ‘God’s image’. This great gift of God helps us to enjoy living together in groups, communities and societies steeped in different cultures and different ways of life. World Association for Christian Communication – Asia region (WACC-Asia) aims at communicating hope by focusing on the quality of life that is complete in Christ, who said, “I came that you may have life in all its fullness.” Read more...

Media’s social mandate spelt at WACC’s Peace Journalism seminar |

| | WACC- Africa Region (WACC-AR) organized a two-day seminar in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania 26-27 March, 2010, to help journalists understand and appreciate why it is essentially important to promote peace.
The seminar participants came from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. They included university lecturers, news reporters, editors and peace activists. Read more...

WACC Partner programme selected for prestigious TV festival |

| | June 2, 2010: Along with programs from the BBC, ZDF (German national television) and other TV stations from all over Europe, SAT-7’s documentary, “Buthayna”, has been selected for screening at the European Television Festival of Religious Programmes in Berlin 2-6 June.
70 programmes from a total of 36 stations in Europe, Canada and the Middle East were entered into the competition, and “Buthayna” is among the 23 programmes selected for screening at the festival. Read more...

Investigative journalism in Mexico is under attack |

| | Operating in a climate permeated by violence and impunity, Mexico City based investigative journalist Laura Castellanos continues to be subjected to acts of intimidation because of her reporting on armed groups and radical movements. According to ARTICLE 19, which issued an Alert on 26 May 2010, the continued harassment of journalists highlights the urgent need for the Mexican State to implement an emergency mechanism to protect journalists at risk. WACC supports this call for freedom of expression and, in the light of its latest issue of Media Development on 'The Right to Memory', the call to rescind laws that guarantee impunity. Read more... |

UN sets dates for civil society input to MDGs Summit |

 | | Following a proposal by the UN Secretary-General, the General Assembly has decided to convene an Millennium Development Goald (MDG) summit (High-level Plenary Meeting) on 20-22 September, with the primary objective to accelerate progress towards all the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
The summit is expected to undertake a comprehensive review of successes, best practices and lessons learned, obstacles and gaps, challenges and opportunities, “leading to concrete strategies for action”. The President of the General Assembly has appointed two "Co-facilitators" to lead the inter-governmental negotiating process. They will likely wait until after the UN Secretary-General releases his report on the MDGs in March to begin. The Co-facilitators are the Ambassadors of Senegal and Denmark to the United Nations in New York. Read more...
