Who Makes the News in 2010? Print E-mail

   Preliminary report of the 2010 Global Media Monitoring Project, has been released in New York, today, 2 March 2010. The report states that only 24% of persons seen, heard, or read about in the news are female. The report further observes that while almost one half (48%) of all news stories reinforce gender stereotypes, while 8% of news stories challenge gender stereotypes. Women in the news are identified by their familial relationships (wife, mother, daughter) five times more often than men. The report was released at a panel discussion and debate on the occasion of the 54th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women CSW. Read more...

 Randy Naylor, General Secretary of the World Association for Christian Communication has resigned from his position as of October 31st, 2010.

WACC annual photo competition Print E-mail

 The WACC annual photo competition is open till 1st May 2010. This year’s theme is Communication and Poverty. Poverty includes communication poverty. Stronger voices of people living in poverty lead to better understanding and action aimed at tackling injustice and inequality. With open access to information and knowledge, poor communities can work towards a better future. Images should focus on communication helping to overcome poverty; tearing down communication barriers; having a voice and being heard. For more information, click here…
 
 
WACC to participate in RCCongress 2010 Print E-mail

 WACC will participate in the once-a-decade multi-faith forum of communicators of religion, RCCongress 2010, being held in Chicago, April 7-10, 2010. The theme of the congress is Embracing Change: Communicating faith in Today’s World. An estimated 1,200 communication professionals from around the world are expected to attend. Portrait of vanishing Turkey wins two awards at Berlin film festival Print E-mail
  The Ecumenical Jury at the 60th Berlinale awarded its Competition prize to Bal (Honey) directed by Semih Kaplanoglu (Turkey/Germany, 2010). The International Jury also gave the film its coveted Golden Bear. A splendid portrait of the poet as a young child, Bal tells the story of the blossoming of the sensibility in a rural boy, Yusuf, living in the highlands of northeast Turkey. Immersed in a forest of overwhelming beauty, Yusuf´s life points to a connection with nature that provides not only material subsistence but spiritual learning, highlighting issues such as family love and involvement in the community. Communication Rights: at the centre of all development processes Print E-mail

  Over the last 10 years communicators around the world have begun to speak increasingly of “communication rights” and have described these rights as inseparable from human rights as recognised by the world at large.  WACC has persistently advocated for the recognition of communication rights arguing that by recognising, implementing and protecting people’s communication rights, societies are recognising and implementing all other human rights. Bolivia: School radio, a tool for children’s rights Print E-mail

 In two remote localities in Southern Bolivia, a  long time partner of WACC, the Servicio de Capacitación en Radio y Televisión para el Desarrollo (SECRAD) de la Universidad Católica Boliviana “San  Pablo” has recently finished implementing a radio Project with children.   With financial support from UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund), SECRAD worked with some  74 children in San Lucas and Monteagudo in the Bolivian department of Chuquisaca.  SECRAD personnel undertook the 11 hour road journey several times to work with children and teachers in 11 schools. Ten Key Challenges to Freedom of Expression in the Next Decade Print E-mail
  To mark their tenth year of collaboration, the four rapporteurs on free expression issued a joint declaration last week outlining the ten main challenges to free expression in the next decade. WACC supports the initiative which was organised by ARTICLE 19 and the Centre for Law and Democracy. The statement emphasizes the critical role of freedom of expression, including diversity and pluralism, as an "essential tool" to defend other rights and "as a core element of democracy."
