WACC and International Federation of Journalists Establish Cooperation Agreement |

 | | WACC is pleased to announce an agreement established in June 2009 with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) to work together on the promotion of gender equality in journalistic practice. Both WACC and the IFJ believe strongly in the need for gender equality in the work of media and are committed to the promotion of ethical and quality journalism that will help to build a culture of respect for gender rights in society at large. Both organisations see the promotion of gender equality in journalistic practice as paramount, and in June 2009 agreed to cooperate in this key area of joint concern. Read more... |

Reminder for submission of project partnership proposals |

 | | The next deadline is 6 September 2009 for projects that start 1 January 2010 and later.
WACC provides financial support for communication projects that demonstrate concern for genuine empowerment - highlighted in WACC’s Christian Principles of Communication as creating community, strengthening participation and freedom, developing cultures and being prophetic. Such projects will seek to bring about change in one of the following programme areas. Read more... |

Alternative broadcasting for the empowerment of migrant workers |

| | Based in Hong Kong since 1984, the Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (APMM) is a church-based regional migrant centre working for the promotion and protection of the rights and wellbeing of migrants in the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions. It has consistently promoted and protected the rights and welfare of migrants in both regions which attract large numbers of migrants, the majority of whom work as domestic labourers.
Although originally APMM’s constituency was the Filipino migrant community, APMM also services other migrant groups including Indonesian, Nepali, Thai and Sri Lankan. APMM is committed to support the international migrants’ movement through advocacy, organizing and building linkages and networks for the advancement of migrants’ rights in the host countries. Peace journalism guide appears in Nepali |

 | | Subaltern Forum, an NGO in Nepal working to promote democratic communication for marginalised people, has published WACC's No-Nonsense guide to Peace Journalism in the country's national language. Nepali is the mother tongue of a country that has several indigenous languages. It is also spoken in parts of neighbouring Bhutan, India and Myanmar.
In 2008 WACC partnered with Subaltern Forum on a series of radio programmes aimed at increasing awareness among the people about the proposed Constituent Assembly and its role in the ongoing peace process in Nepal. The programmes significantly contributed to the peaceful transition of the country to a federal republic after the end of the 240-year old institution of monarchy. Read more... |

WACC-Asia celebrates “Communication Sunday” |

 | | “Asia Communication Sunday” was successfully celebrated on 21 June with observances around the region on the theme: “Communication is peace: Taking sides to build viable communities.” The biggest event took place at Gurukul Lutheran Theological College in Chennai, India with a full slate of activities for the “Asia Communication Week”, June 21-27 . Gurukul faculty and students conducted creative worship services and morning devotions at the College along with multi-media community outreach programmes and student competitions (see article below for more details). Groundbreaking document links freedom of expression and equality |

| | The Camden Principles on Freedom of Expression and Equality are founded on the understanding that freedom of expression and equality are foundational rights.
“The Camden Principles demonstrate that the rights to equality and freedom of expression go hand-in-hand and mutually reinforce each other, and that neither one of these indispensable human rights can be achieved at the expense of the other.” With these words Dr Agnès Callamard, ARTICLE 19’s Executive Director introduced a ground breaking document which will guide legislators, policy-makers and civil society alike in balancing the rights to freedom of expression and equality. WACC releases DVD on communication and peace |

| | WACC has released a DVD on the theme of communicating for peace. The DVD, a first for WACC, is an educational resource for peace advocates and journalists about the importance of telling stories to communicate peace.
The DVD, produced in collaboration with United Church of Canada and the Anglican Church of Canada, comes out of WACC’s global Congress on Communication is peace held in Cape Town, South Africa, October 2008. Over 300 faith based and secular communicators and peace advocates from around the world attended. Read more... |
