Solidarity with Haiti: WACC's Appeal Drucken E-Mail

You will have seen in the news that Haiti has suffered a severe and debilitating earthquake which has devastated the lives of thousands of people. It is heartening to see the compassionate response of governments, international humanitarian agencies, and individuals to the crisis.

What you will not have seen – because there are more immediate rescue and humanitarian aid priorities – is the damage done to the communications infrastructure of local communities, especially community radio stations. In the longer term, that damage will also have to be repaired.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, yet its vibrant oral culture of alternative communication is evident in 250 community radio stations broadcasting in both Creole and French. Part of that infrastructure, so vital to the day-to-day survival of ordinary Haitians, has been destroyed.

For many years WACC has supported communication initiatives in Haiti. Now WACC is launching an appeal to raise funds eventually to rebuild community communications in those areas of Haiti most severely affected by the earthquake.

Donations will be used to replace damaged communication structures, to purchase new broadcasting equipment, and to train new journalists.

The Appeal will be administered by WACC and fully reported and accounted for in compliance with professional standards. Cheques can be sent directly to the WACC Toronto office (payable to “WACC”) or funds can be transferred to one of our accounts and marked “Haiti Appeal”.
