Celebrating Cinema. Mit dieser Ausgabe wird das 50-jährige Bestehen der protestantischen Filmorganisation Interfilm gefeiert. Sie wurde 1955 in Paris gegründet. Erster Präsident war Henri de Tienda, der Generalsekretär des “Service cinématographique d’évangelisation” der Reformierten Kirche Frankreichs. Eine der Hauptaktivitäten von Interfilm war – und bleibt – die Beteiligung an Jurys bei nationalen und internationalen Filmfestivals. Zunächst hatten protestantische Kirchen und römisch-katholische Kirche getrennte Jurys. Aber 1973 wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit der Organisation “Catholique Internationale pour le Cinéma et l’Audiovisuel” (OCIC), heute bekannt als Signis, die erste Ökumenische Jury für das Locarno Film Festival gebildet, wo sie weiterhin hoch angesehen ist.

Im Juli 2004 fand ein bemerkenswertes Ereignis in einer kleinen Stadt an der Südküste Haitis statt. Vom 9. Juli an fanden im Rahmen des ersten Jacmel-Filmfestivals 196 kostenlose Vorführungen von insgesamt 85 Filmen an sechs Aufführungsorten statt, darunter einem Freilichtkino, wo zu nächtlichen Vorführungen eingeladen wurde. Mehr als 20 Regisseure nahmen an dem Festival teil, wobei einige Delegationen aus Ländern wie Frankreich, Spanien, Kuba, Jamaika und den USA angereist waren. Einige der Regisseure wirkten an Workshops zu unterschiedlichen Aspekten der Filmproduktion mit.

This is not true of Pradip Thomas who, as editor of Media Development from 1994 to 2004, was adept at the lost art of winnowing. Pradip left the staff of the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) at the end of last year to take up a post as Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. We bid him farewell.
