Southern African Media and Gender Institute

THRU is a campaigning and educational human rights organisation which takes an ethical approach to human rights as an effective way to promote the diversity and complexity of South African life. THRU has joined with Women’s Media Watch to form the Southern African Media and Gender Institute, SAMGI, and runs a variety of media and legal projects including:

‘Destiny's Calling’ a series of Human Rights Educational Radio Dramas
On World Aids Day 1 December 2003. THRU launched it's new cartoon character, HIVA, a social construction of the virus which aims to remove stigma and thereby create a more comfortable learning environment. Talented cartoonist Fred Mwallo, pictured right, hopes that the cartoon character HIVA will also make a regular strip for newspapers.

THRU will also be running a Human Rights Film Festival, in celebration of Human Rights Day - 19 to 22 March 2004, Bijou Cinema and Loft Bar, Cape Town.

WACC is supporting SAMGI to work on gender issues, media monitoring, media training in radio, writing, internet, ICTs, screen printing, media production and new media for advocacy.
