Breaking the Silence on HIV/Aids in St Lucia

WACC is supporting Breaking the Silence, a participatory media project on HIV for young people in St Lucia run by the 911 Media Arts Center and the St. Lucia Red Cross Society.

A shot from the Breaking the Silence website

It is a free, hands-on, intensive, out-of-school workshop series for Caribbean youth that culminates with the creation of a short video about HIV/Aids prevention. Participants learn the facts of HIV prevention, and conceive, shoot, and edit a video of their own design that is then used as a tool in community-based peer leadership presentations.

Videos have been broadcast in the Caribbean, and circulate through universities, schools, media arts centres, and international film/video festivals. In the past few months, Breaking the Silence has been screened:

* at the NGOs exhibit of the XV International AIDS Conference in Bangkok, Thailand.
* at Red Cross conferences in Geneva and Santo Domingo
* as part of International Women’s Day at the Seattle Center
* at the Olympia Teen Media Festival (Washington State)
* at the International Student Film Festival (California)
* on cable television in the Seattle area as part of a series called ‘Global Women’s Voices for Peace and Justice’

WACC supported by funding two video cameras for future iterations of Breaking the Silence
