Hope For HIV/AIDS (HFA), a WACC project partner, has just completed the first year of a three-year project titled “Empowering Faith Leaders to Reduce HIV-related stigma and Discrimination in Lagos, Nigeria”. The project is being implemented in 10 local government areas of Lagos state. At its inception, the project was to target Christian religious leaders. However, after realizing the faith pluralism in the target areas, the schedule was redrawn to include Muslim and traditional faith leaders as well to achieve a more tangible impact.

A team comprising Sarah Speicher from WACC-UK, Sarah Macharia from the WACC Secretariat in Toronto and Andrew Chisamba of WACC-Africa conducted a review of the project, June 16-22, 2012 to evaluate its progress and to consult HFA for advice on various areas related to the project. The review involved site visits, meetings with project stake holders and various systems analyses.

Various activities are lined up for the implementation of the project including baseline surveys to establish the extent of the HIV and Aids Stigma problem and to collect baseline data; advocacy and training of faith leaders and developing benchmarks for the project. The first year saw completion of the baseline survey and the piloting of advocacy and training.
