“In addition to enhancing their writing and production skills for radio, the training was an opportunity for the participants to use a range of creative techniques and media technology to communicate, especially about issues affecting women in their communities” says femLINKPACIFIC Executive Producer, Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls, “At the same time, digital storytelling, like radio, is a safe space for young women to address some of the more sensitive issues using appropriate and accessible media technology.” The Generation Next project stems from the launch of the organisation’s suitcase radio station in 2004, when a team of students assisted in producing monthly community radio broadcasts. To date, femLINKPACIFIC, a feminist media organisation and a WACC corporate member, has trained more than 50 young women. “I have realized that I can play a much greater role in raising awareness about women issues in my community through the use of the media technology. I started by writing my own script and my own story! “ said one participant. This year, programmes will focus on in-depth features, weekly “vox pops” and Women’s Market Report for weekend broadcasts in the capital city. Bhagwan-Rolls says that the Generation Next team is paving way for strengthening community media network through the involvement of young women from rural areas and with a vision to improve the access of target communities to Fiji and the Pacific’s only feminist-based community radio station.
