Haiti: Médialternatif/AlterPresse offices totally destroyed Print E-mail

An update from former president of WACC - Caribbean region and Editor of AlterPresse

PORT AU PRINCE, HAITI, 14 January 2010: The possibilities for communication are extremely precarious after the powerful earthquake of January 12 devastated the capital as well as the surrounding area and plunged Haiti into despair and pain.

Alterpresse regrets not having been able to inform you at the time of this terrible shock, which has destroyed its offices.  The alternatives that we contemplated did not function until the end of the evening of January 14.

We have not lost colleagues within the institution. Beethoven was the last to leave the office just before the earthquake.  Caught by the shock, Paulette, who made the customary check of the office before closing the doors, found herself trapped.  She was with her daughter.  But they were both able to escape through a hole.

We do not yet know the situation of our team of collaborators and their families.  We are trying to establish contact with them as soon as we can.

We thank you infinitely for the care that you have shown through the messages that have flooded our emails. We will do our best to share with you AlterPresse’s view of this catastrophe that grieves the population of Haiti.
