The Department of Social Concerns of the Diocese of Madurai and Ramnad of Church of South India was able to carry out one year programme on HIV/AIDS 2008 – 2009. It was a journey of a church in seeing, involving in the experience of HIV victims. The church members consist of rural and urban congregations lay and clergy leaders, educationalists and institutional heads together learnt to know scientifically the spread of HIV/AIDS and how it affected a person and a community. The project was designed to empower people who are directly infected and affected. The second stage of programme was aimed to benefit women and girl children. The third phase of concentration was given to train church communities and leaders through churches and educational institutions. Participation, education, information and communication were the main elements of the whole programme. The IEC tool materials were developed by people’s participation from every walk of life. For example HIV affected and infected persons, medical persons, spiritual leaders, church executives, women and children represented in developing IEC materials.
