In Bolivia WACC partnered with Radio Alternativa, an initiative of the city of Santa Cruz’s Casa de la Mujer which promotes and defends women’s rights. Similar to trends in other parts of the world, in Bolivia women’s participation in development processes is neither recognized nor acknowledged. Media contribute to the negation of women’s contributions through sexist portrayal or erasure, in turn reproducing inequitable gender power relations leading to the violation of their rights. A survey of audio, visual and print media content produced hard data on sexist treatment and the denial of women’s contributions to local development. 550 women were trained in gender-centered media literacy based on the survey results to enable them engage more effectively and critically with media on coverage of issues of concern to them.
